Bogalusa

Bogalusa is a city in Washington Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 13,365 at the 2000 census. It is the only community in Washington Parish incorporated as a city. The Great Southern Lumber Company mill was built there in 1906, and a community quickly grew around it. Bogalusa was incorporated as a city on July 4, 1914. At its peak, the Great Southern Lumber Company sawmills produced over 1,000,000 board feet of lumber a year. The sawmill closed in 1938, but was replaced as the city's main industry by a paper mill and a chemical plant.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.7 square kilometers. 24.6 square kilometers of it is land and 0.1 square kilometers of it is water. Since its founding, the economy of Bogalusa has revolved around the lumber mill and paper plant; the current mill is said to be the largest pine mill in the world.
In the city the population was spread out with 27.4 percent under the age of 18, 9.2 percent from 18 to 24, 23.9 percent from 25 to 44, 21.3 percent from 45 to 64, and 18.2 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 82.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.0 males. Bogalusa operates its own public school system. Bogalusa students are zoned to Bogalusa City Schools. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and gain enthusiasm in its natural beauty and populace. Bogalusa enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers.
