The United States of America is a country in North America that extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and shares land borders with Canada and Mexico. The United States is a federal constitutional republic, with its capital in Washington, D.C., District of Columbia.

The city of Astoria is the county seat of Clatsop County, Oregon, United States. GR6 It is situated near the mouth of the Columbia River, and was named after the American investor John Jacob Astor. The population was 9,813 at the 2000 census.

The Lewis and Clark Expedition spent the winter of 1805 to 1806 at Fort Clatsop, a small log structure south and west of modern day Astoria. The expedition had hoped a ship would come by to take them back east, but instead endured a tortuous winter of rain and cold, then returned east the way they came. Today the fort has been recreated and is now a national monument.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.0 percent under the age of 18, 9.1 percent from 18 to 24, 26.4 percent from 25 to 44, 24.5 percent from 45 to 64, and 15.9 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.9 males.

An album by The Ataris, so long, Astoria, has cover art and a title song depicting the city. Astoria is mentioned in Neal Stephenson's novel Snow Crash as the best place at that point in the novel to get to the USS Enterprise. As it is often regarded as among the most beautiful parts and one of the most visited places amongst the most die-hard travelers the world over.
